Water Efficiency addresses the importance of reducing demand for potable water and reusing rainwater in order to protect limited freshwater supplies, create high-quality water for home use, and limit the need for municipal water and wastewater infrastructure.

Indoor Air Quality addresses the proper selection of materials like non off-gassing and low toxicity substances, the use of effective filtration methods, the need for daylighting and views to the outside, fresh air circulation and other strategies to ensure a healthy, desirable indoor environment.

NAHB Green Home Building Guidelines

The NAHB guidelines created for mainstream home builders are designed to highlight the ways a mainstream home builder can effectively weave environmental solutions holistically into a new home. The program creates and provides a tool that local associations can use to create their own green home building program.


LEED for Homes

The LEED for Homes program is being developed by the USGBC with input from local and national stakeholder groups. It is a voluntary initiative promoting the transformation of the mainstream home building industry towards more sustainable practices. It will provide a much-needed tool for homebuilders, homeowners, and local governments for building environmentally sound, healthy, and resource-efficient places to live.


Healthy Built Homes

The NC HealthyBuilt Homes Program provides a certificate for North Carolina homes meeting "green home guidelines" built by residential builders who practice sustainable, high performance building strategies making the home a comfortable, healthy and affordable place that reduces energy and water usage, promotes renewable energy use and helps protect the land where the home is built.
